Death of the MIDI Controller

When I first started with software synthesizers I chose the M-Audio Keystation 61es as my controller. Recently it started to "fall asleep" in the midst of band practice and other times which just can't happen, especially during a show. So, using the 3 year warranty I had purchased for my controller I sent it in for a refund. With the money I got in return I decided to upgrade and bought the M-Audio Axiom Pro 61 key. I'm so glad that I did too. Immediately after setting up the Axiom Pro in Record 1.5 I could feel the connection that the software and the controller made. To get the full benefit of the controller I suggest you read the manual, which I believe customer support should reply to all e-mails with "RTFM." Accordingly I  will releasing a youtube series on how to properly set up your axiom Pro controller and how to edit it's functions to your liking. As a mac user, the hardest part in Record 1.5 is switching from the Mixer, Rack, and Sequencer. The shortcuts are F5, F6 and F7, which are sub-keys which require you to press the fn key at the same time. With the Axiom pro, I was able to program 3 of the buttons to act as those keys so my hands never have to leave the controller. No matter what, during editing I will always use my mouse because I choose precision of accessibility. Although, the navigation buttons which Automat to the software you use work fine when browsing through your song. The point is I love my new controller and can't wait to use it for a live show! Stay tuned for videos about the Axiom Pro and browse through the links below to see what I used in this post.

Advanced Mixing With Redrum

What advanced drum mixing in Record does is it allows you to create a mix channel for each individual sound in Records SSL mixer. This allows us to apply effects to individual sounds from our Redrum device. Check out this weeks video for the how to:

Next week we look at how to finish our songs in the Create a Song series.

Creating a Song: Part III

This week we take a look at the verse and components that make it. Discovering new techniques change the way the song flows. Generally the verse of a song is longer than the chorus and contains less musical hype. This video goes over all this and more.

Next week we take a look at how we can edit our drums in an advanced way.

Creating a Song: Part II

Last week we went over the different things that can effect your into and how to transition past it. This week we are going to take a look at the pre-chorus and the chorus along with how to deal with transitions to help separate the parts of your song. A big problem with starting a song is laying down all your ideas at once and not knowing how to move on. So, instead of putting everything on the floor at once, we continue to build up. This video explains all you need to know about the second step to your song.

Next week we will take a look at the verse and look back at the transitions we made in part I and II.

Creating a Song: Part I

How many times have you started a song of your own and never finished it? Not because you were lazy or didn't have time, but because you were stuck. Fear not! You are not alone. Even I have several save files, that only contain and intro or chorus. Over the past few weeks I decided it was time to get over the writers block. How did I do it? I started experimenting with features I ignored because they weren't what I used to. Here I have created a collection of techniques to use to help you get the intro going and finally get past it!

Now that you have you intro set up, check out next weeks tip for creating the Chorus!
